There are plenty of reasons that this is one of the few console wars where I have no regrets about my decision. I've never had my credit card information stolen from XBox Live. The XBox 360 actually has games I care about. And, at the end of the day, it just looks better.

I think it's somewhat ironic that we've glossed over the hardware issues of the first generation 360s on this of all blogs. However, I agree with your assessment.
To put it succinctly, the Nintendo Wii was a lot of wasted potential and iPhones did more for the "blue ocean" than waggling ever did. The PS3 was an also-ran in the US.
My biggest takeaway this generation is that this may be the last real "generation". We're well past the point of diminishing returns for graphics, so new hardware is going to require more time between releases for a credible case to be made for its purchase. This has already started happening as last year would normally have been punctuated by a new console release, yet even the hardware-light Wii U was only announced ant there have been precious few signs of entries from Microsoft and Sony.
